Water damage — first steps before cleaners arrive

Do this first
- Make it safe. If water is near power points, treat electricity as live until a licensed person says otherwise.
- Stop the flow if you can reach a valve without wading into a hazard.
- Photograph rooms, skirting, the source, and serial-number stickers on ruined appliances before you pile things in the driveway.
- Move what is light — lamps, small tables, clean washing — off the wet floor. Do not gouge wet carpet by dragging sofas.
- Extract. Towels are for edges. Standing water wants a wet-vac or a restorer. See the water-damage hub.
- Air. Fans across the surface, HVAC if the system is dry and safe, dehumidifier if you have one. A single cracked window in a humid week is not a drying plan.
Do not do this
- Hide the smell with aerosol
- Turn up the heat and walk away (you can cook a pad)
- Bleach a living-room carpet
- Throw out evidence before the insurer has a chance to see it — unless it is a hygiene emergency (sewage)
- Assume “it will be fine by Monday” in February
Category matters
Clean supply water, grey water and sewage are different conversations. Storm water that crossed a garden is not drinking water. When in doubt, limit contact and say what you observed in the email.
Insurance notes
Write the timeline while you remember it: when you noticed, what you shut off, what you moved. We do not complete claim forms and we do not invent policy language. If you have a claim number, include it. More context sits on the water-damage service page.
When mould is already visible
Stop casual wiping of large areas. Read mould removal. The clock started when the pad got wet, not when you saw spots.
After the emergency
Ordinary soil belongs on carpet cleaning. Method choice after a saved carpet still follows carbonation vs steam and process. Heritage /water-damage-restoration-gold-coast/ 301s to the service hub; this guide is the first-day essay.
