Pet urine odour — what actually works

The short science
Fresh urine is not the same molecule as last year’s patch. Urea breaks down; salts stay; bacteria keep working in a damp pad. A surface shampoo can make the room smell like citrus and dog. When the air-con cycles off and the pile warms up, the odour walks back. That is chemistry, not bad luck. The longer plain-English version is the pet urine guide.
What actually works
- Find the map. UV or moisture meters beat guessing. Pets rarely use one polite spot.
- Get to the reservoir. If the pad is loaded, cleaning only the tips of the yarn is theatre.
- Break the organics down, then remove them. Enzyme or oxidiser choices depend on fibre and dye. There is no honest one-product slogan.
- Dry it. Gold Coast humidity is an odour amplifier. No dry, no win.
We do not quote a Chem-Dry P.U.R.T. result or a laboratory percentage from an old footer. Those claims belonged to a franchise system.
When to skip another clean and talk replacement
If urine has reached particle board, some slabs, or a wool that has already been bleached by amateur products, the honest answer may be cut-out or replace. A good brief includes the age of the carpet, whether it is a unit (neighbours notice), and whether the animal is still in the home.
